How to Remove Baked-On Grease From an Air Fryer Basket
To remove baked-on grease from an air fryer basket, start with a 15-minute soak in warm water and mild dish soap, then use a soft sponge or soft-bristled brush. If a dark, sticky patch remains, apply a paste of baking soda and warm water for 10–15 minutes and wipe gently.
Do not solve stubborn grease by increasing force. Steel wool, abrasive pads, metal tools and harsh oven cleaners can remove the nonstick surface before they remove the stain.
Before you clean: check what you are looking at
Grease residue and damaged coating can look similar. Washable buildup usually feels raised, sticky or uneven. Coating damage may show as peeling, bubbling, deep scratches or a patch where the underlying material is exposed.
Cleaning cannot restore a missing coating. If the surface is peeling or flaking, stop using aggressive methods and check whether the basket can be replaced. Our guide to when to replace an air fryer basket separates cosmetic staining from damage that changes the decision.
Also read the manual for your exact model. “Dishwasher-safe,” removable handles and approved cleaning products vary. The steps below stay within the overlap of published Cosori and SharkNinja guidance, but your manual is the final instruction.
The safest escalation method
| Stage | Use | Time | Stop if |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Warm soak | Mild dish soap and warm water | 15 min | The manual prohibits submerging that part |
| 2. Gentle agitation | Soft sponge or soft-bristled brush | 1–3 min | The surface starts lifting or flaking |
| 3. Spot paste | Baking soda and warm water | 10–15 min | The manual prohibits baking soda |
| 4. Repeat | Return to stages 1–3 | As needed | Only permanent staining remains |

1. Unplug and let the appliance cool
Remove the basket and crisper plate only when they are safe to handle. Cosori suggests allowing residual warmth to soften grease, but that does not mean washing a dangerously hot part or placing it under cold water.
2. Remove loose grease and crumbs
Tip crumbs into the bin and wipe pooled oil with a paper towel. Removing loose material first keeps the wash water from becoming a greasy bath that redeposits residue into holes and corners.
3. Soak for 15 minutes
Fill a sink or suitable basin with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Submerge only the removable parts that the manual allows you to wash this way. Cosori and SharkNinja both specify a 15-minute warm, soapy soak for the basket or drawer and crisper plate.
Use warm water, not a kettle of boiling water. The published manufacturer methods do not require boiling water, and hotter is not automatically safer for coatings, seals or plastic fittings.
4. Use the softest tool that works
Start with the non-abrasive side of a sponge. Use a soft-bristled brush for perforations, seams and corners. Work across the residue rather than digging under it with a knife, scraper or metal utensil.
America’s Test Kitchen also favours hand-washing nonstick components with hot water, dish soap and a sponge. It reserves a heavy-duty scrub brush for baskets and trays that are not nonstick. That distinction matters: a tool suitable for bare metal may be too aggressive for a coated basket.
5. Apply baking-soda paste only to what remains
SharkNinja gives a specific mixture: two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with one tablespoon of warm water. Apply the paste directly to the buildup, leave it for 10 minutes, then wipe gently. Cosori recommends a baking-soda-and-water paste for burnt oil and gives a 15-minute dwell time.
That produces a reasonable range of 10–15 minutes, but only when the manual for your model does not prohibit the method. Use the paste as a spot treatment, not as a reason to scour the whole basket.
6. Rinse and dry completely
Rinse until no detergent or powder remains. Dry accessible surfaces, then let the parts air-dry before reassembly. Moisture trapped beneath a crisper plate or around fittings can create stale odours and makes it harder to see whether grease actually remains.
If the grease is still there
Repeat the soak and spot-paste cycle instead of choosing a harder pad. Some polymerised oil may leave brown or amber staining even when the surface no longer feels sticky. A stain is not the same as transferable grease, and removing the last colour may require more abrasion than the coating can tolerate.
Stop when one of these happens:
- The residue no longer feels raised or sticky.
- Rinse water runs clear and no oily film transfers to a white paper towel.
- Further cleaning would require scraping or an abrasive chemical.
- The surface reveals peeling, chips, blisters or deep scratches.
If grease has spread above the basket, use the separate process for cleaning an air fryer heating element. Do not carry a soaking method into the electrical housing.
Cleaning methods to avoid
Steel wool, abrasive pads and metal scrapers
Cosori and SharkNinja both warn against them because they can scratch or strip nonstick coating. Damage also makes later cleaning harder because food adheres to the roughened surface.
Commercial oven cleaner
An air fryer basket is not an enamelled oven wall. SharkNinja warns against commercial oven cleaner around the appliance because it can corrode internal components and release fumes when heated. Do not assume a caustic cleaner is food-contact safe merely because it removes carbon.
Dishwasher tablets used as a soaking chemical
SharkNinja says its engineering tests found that this social-media method accelerates nonstick degradation. Dishwasher tablets use concentrated alkaline cleaning agents intended for a controlled dishwasher cycle, not as a general basket soak.
Running soap, water or cleaner through a hot cooking cycle
The manufacturer methods loaded for this article clean removable parts outside the powered appliance. Do not invent a steam-clean cycle for a model that does not provide one. Philips lists steam cleaning only for specified models; a feature on one model is not permission for every air fryer.
Automatic dishwasher without checking the manual
Some components are dishwasher-safe and others are not. Even when allowed, SharkNinja rates dishwasher use as more wearing than a warm hand wash, while America’s Test Kitchen chooses hand-washing for convenience and coating care. “Dishwasher-safe” means permitted, not necessarily gentlest.
How to prevent the buildup returning
- Wash with soap after every use. America’s Test Kitchen notes that wiping alone leaves food residue behind.
- Do not let pooled oil cool in the drawer. Remove it once the appliance is safe to handle.
- Use silicone-tipped or wooden tools. Protecting the coating makes future residue easier to release.
- Inspect the upper element regularly. Basket cleaning cannot prevent smoke if grease is burning above it. See why an air fryer smokes.
- Use liners selectively, not automatically. They can catch some drips but also change airflow. Read the air fryer liner safety rules first.
What this method cannot fix
- A coating that has peeled, bubbled or worn through.
- Rust caused by exposed metal or damaged plating.
- A warped basket or loose handle.
- Grease inside inaccessible electrical or fan components.
- Permanent colour changes that no longer behave like residue.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use baking soda on an air fryer basket?
Cosori and SharkNinja both publish a baking-soda paste method for stubborn grease. Use it only if your exact model’s instructions do not prohibit it, leave it briefly, wipe gently and rinse completely.
Can I use vinegar with baking soda?
The basket method shared by both manufacturers uses baking soda and warm water, not vinegar. Mixing an acid and base also consumes much of each ingredient’s chemical activity. Follow the simpler published method.
Why is the grease sticky after washing?
Repeated heating can turn thin oil films into a tougher polymerised layer. More soaking time and repeated gentle treatment are safer than trying to remove it in one aggressive pass.
Should I replace a stained basket?
Not for colour alone. Replacement becomes more reasonable when the coating peels, food-contact material is exposed, the basket warps or a structural part loosens. Inspect the surface after it is clean and dry.
Can I use a Magic Eraser?
Do not use an abrasive cleaning pad on a nonstick basket unless the manufacturer specifically authorises it. Its apparent effectiveness comes from abrasion—the same mechanism that can alter the coating.
